The Sims 4: Life & Death

One of the most interesting features of The Sims 4‘s new Life & Death expansion is the Reaper career, which functions very differently from other jobs in the game. This supernatural profession can be assigned to Sims to create spiritual guides who lead souls into the afterlife. However, there are many other tasks tied to the Reaper career that must be completed, making it a complex path to follow.
It’s worth noting that any Sim that becomes a Reaper doesn’t become the literal Grim Reaper in The Sims 4. The main soul collector simply needs help with their job, allowing other Sims to get hired as sidekick Reapers until they are promoted. The Reaper role is an active career, meaning you can have a Sim do this job alone or follow them around as they complete tasks for it.
How To Join The Reaper Career
Don’t Worry, You Don’t Need To Die First
Becoming a Reaper is much easier than you’d expect, as you only need to find the profession from the “Find a Job” menu where a Sim can find many other career paths. Although you don’t need to have any specific traits to qualify for the job, being a Reaper always puts a Sim close to death. This means that some Sims with certain skills are more suited to becoming a Reaper than others.

How To Host a Funeral In The Sims 4: Life & Death
The Sims 4: Life & Death gives players plenty of exciting ways to explore the afterlife, but also new ways to mourn, by hosting elaborate funerals.
Sims with the Macabre quality are already set up to become good Undertakers or Reapers in the Life & Death expansion of The Sims 4. Some skills a Sim can focus on to be even better for the Reaper job are:
- Thanatology
- Charisma
- Fitness
- Writing
Those with the best traits for a Reaper may be approached by the Grim Reaper themselves, who will ask that Sim if they are interested in taking on their death-adjacent career.
You can start the Reaper career as something called a “Grimtern” within The Netherworld Department of Death (NDD) that hires you for the position. During this process, you will get trained on how to go through a Reaper’s day-to-day, which involves doing some tasks you have probably never seen before.
All Reaper Tasks & How To Complete Them
Find Souls And Help Them Move On
From the NDD headquarters, you’ll have to learn how to reap souls during assignments determined by the Scry Bowl within the afterlife area. The Scry Bowl tells you whether there is a person who has died recently. As a Reaper, it is your job to study a target of reaping, reap them successfully, and then carefully extract their soul so it can move on.
Reapers are not concerned with rebirth in The Sims 4, only the death of a fellow Sim. A typical day as a Reaper might present you with the following tasks:
Sample Task |
How To Complete |
---|---|
Practice Reaping |
Click on a mannequin in NDD HQ to experiment with soul collecting. |
Research Assignment |
Click on an NDD bookshelf to study up on who has died to make soul extraction easier. |
Perform Scythe Maintenance |
Click on your Reaper Sim to check the effectiveness of your reaping weapon. |
Scry For Travel |
Click on the Scry Bowl to head out toward a reaping target. |
Emotional Reaping |
Investigate a disastrous death and hear Pleas from other Sims, then determine whether a soul lives or dies. |
Submit A Death Certificate |
After delivering a soul to the Netherworld Portal, you can use a computer to record the soul’s disposal. |
Socialize With Co-Workers |
Click on other NPC Sims in the NDD HQ building. |
Analyzing Death Trends |
Click on a computer at NDD to anticipate when the next reaping will take place. |
Close Netherworld Fissure |
Look for blue orbs in the world that are escaped souls, then collect them to help meet your Soul Quota. |
Harvest Grimbrosia |
Locate Grimbrosia plants and use your Scythe to harvest them for the Grim Reaper. |

10 Best Sims 4 Content Packs, Ranked
The Sims 4 has largely been defined by its post-release content additions, but there are a handful of DLCs that are a cut above the rest.
Other tasks you may run into are Afterlife Emergencies, which could range from repairing the Scry Bowl to closing more Netherworld Fissures than usual. Rarer assignments like recalibrating Grim’s Slablet, ordering Office Supplies for NDD’s computers, or expelling Mischievous Ghosts are all tasks that you may also have to complete as a Reaper in training.
Most of the time, tasks during a reaping will involve your Reaper Sim clicking on the urn where the deceased is being kept, or the dead body of a Sim who has passed away.
The most important part of a Reaper’s job is to collect enough souls to fulfill your Soul Quota at the end of a limited time. One of the realistic parts of The Sims 4 is how every job has clear goals, including the unorthodox Reapers. If you meet your Soul Quota, which you can check at any time from a NDD computer, you may be given some rewards from the Grim Reaper’s Box-o-Fun(eral).
Get Paid More For Your Afterlife Efforts
There are 10 levels to the Reaper job, with a Sim only being called a Reaper when they get the final promotion. Every position within the NDD has different hours and pay for a Sim, adjusting how you can approach the career at different points. You have to complete or meet various requirements to get promoted, but some stages of progression may take longer than others.
Some jobs have multiple career paths you can follow when you reach a certain level, but there is only one route for the Reaper job a Sim can take.
Here are all the promotion levels for the Reaper career in The Sims 4, as well as their individual hours and how much a Sim gets paid:

All Reaper Career Rewards
Make Sure To Hit Your Quota
Rewards tied to the Reaper career revolve around your usual Soul Quota of 25 souls per week. This goal can be met by you and your fellow Reaper at NDD, earning you extra rewards if you manage to surpass your quota before time runs out. Failing to meet your Soul Quota will negatively impact your Sim’s Reaper performance and prevent them from gaining any reward for that week.
The Grim Reaper also sets the Soul Quota at the beginning of each week. Those who struggle to meet their quota can substitute souls from jobs with Lost Souls, which you can buy from the Mysterious Merchant NPC.
You can reach bronze, silver, or gold tiers as a Reaper to gain better rewards, similar to other jobs in The Sims 4. However, you can also get rewards from your promotions, giving you interesting cosmetics to use. These promotional rewards include:
- Dust-to-Dust Buster – Basic Reaper Uniform
- Death’s Negotiation Reporter (D.N.R.) – Timeless Hourglass Household Inventory
- Reaper – Grand Reaper Uniform, Grim’s Right Hand Reward Trait
Staying diligent will help you make quota consistently, earning you tons of free rewards every week from your Reaper Sim. Although the Reaper career in The Sims 4 may be demanding, the benefits from such a soul-draining job in the Life & Death expansion are certainly worth the effort.
