WIESBADEN, Germany – “My job is to be visionary – visionary for this organization,” said Wiesbaden Family and MWR Director Gregory Holzinger, in welcoming attendees to the Emerging Leaders Forum on March 28.

“I need to make sure that we’re on track – that we’re heading in the right direction,” said Holzinger, explaining that encouraging and helping employees stay on track to higher level responsibilities is good for the organization, the Army as a whole and the individual.

The event, held in the Community Activity Center on Clay Kaserne, brought together Family and MWR staff from the various divisions and service agencies in Wiesbaden for inspirational life lessons and training in preparation for future challenges.

“We have to have an avenue to prepare you for that,” said Holzinger, adding that by asking questions and becoming better informed about the overall organization, employees are better able to see the big picture and advance in their careers.

“Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do anything, because you can,” said U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Deputy to the Commander Mitchell Jones.

“If you really want to make it in this business, you have to impress those who control your destiny,” said Jones. “What gets you promoted … you never know … but it comes down to doing the right thing all the time.”

The garrison’s Deputy to the Commander, a military veteran and long-time federal civilian leader, praised the efforts of Family and MWR employees.

“I call you guys the first line of defense – everyone in FMWR – you are very unique in what you do.,” Jones said, pointing out that everything from first-rate child care to Army Community Service, recreational services to Auto Skills ensure that service members and their families are well cared for – especially when military members are deployed.

Jones also stressed the importance of listening to leaders, taking their guidance to heart and working hard to stand out from the crowd by always going the extra mile.

Maj. Gen. Robert M. Joyce School for Family and MWR Instructors Suzie Desmond and Tammy Dengler led participants through a series of exercises aimed at using generational information to meet the needs of potential and current team members. Their focus was on appealing to employees’ strengths and needs based on generational information through the selection of workplace practices and targeted employee production, Desmond said.

“The lesson supports readiness through enhancing the Army Civilian’s commitment to provide good stewardship of resources and personnel,” she added.

Human Resources Specialist Eric J. Zelco also offered insight and training during the Emerging Leaders Forum.

NAF Support Services Chief Casey Malloy said the Emerging Leaders Forum, Managers Working Group and other ongoing initiatives are all part of the organization’s overall efforts in “Building The Bench” – to create an environment where employees are motivated and inspired to excel while continuing to provide outstanding services and support for service members and their families.
