Dr. Ashley Waddington appointed Assistant Dean, Professional Development | Faculty of Health Sciences

On the recommendation of Dean Jane Philpott, Matthew Evans, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University has appointed Dr. Ashley Waddington as Assistant Dean, Professional Development, effective January 1, 2024, until June 30, 2028.     

Reporting to the Vice-Dean, Health Sciences Education, Dr. Waddington provides administrative and educational leadership within the Office of Professional Development and Educational Scholarship (OPDES). This office serves to provide challenging and innovative interprofessional educational and scholarship opportunities, to meet the learning and developmental needs of learners, educators, scholars, and healthcare practitioners in Queen’s Health Sciences (QHS) and our region. 

Dr. Waddington joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Queen’s in 2013 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022. She has a Master of Public Administration from Queen’s University, a Doctor of Medicine degree from McMaster University, and a Bachelor of Science (Animal Biology) from the University of California, Davis. 

Dr. Waddington brings a wealth of continuing professional development (CPD) experience to her role – both within and outside of Queen’s. She has developed numerous CPD programs and curricula, including online programs developed for MDBriefcase.com, the Foundation for Medical Practice Education, and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC), as well as in-person teaching sessions and hands-on workshops and simulation sessions. She is frequently invited to provide CPD teaching at the local, regional and national level. As a Board member of the Canadian Obstetrics and Gynecology Review Program (COGRP), she led the expansion of the program into a continuing professional development opportunity for physicians already in practice.   

Dr. Waddington’s administrative experience includes serving as Medical Director of the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Program at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and Lennox and Addington County General Hospital (since 2019) and Medical Director, Lakeside Clinic, KHSC (since 2015). Within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Queen’s and KHSC, her experience includes Chair, Finance and Staffing Committee and Co-Chair of the Joint Patient Safety and Quality Committee. 

Nationally, Dr. Waddington’s leadership experience includes serving as Board Director of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada, the Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health, the Association of Academic Professionals in Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada, the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Medical Forum, and the Canadian Residency Matching Service.   

Dr. Waddington’s clinical activities and research interests include complicated contraception cases, adolescent contraception and pregnancy, paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, transgender health, health care access, and public policy.
